The following species have been recorded in the Reserve.
Thirty species of butterfly have also been observed.
Eland have been brought into the Reserve. Their numbers are however carefully managed by Reserve staff. Red Hartebeest have also been reintroduced to the Reserve.
Birding in the BBNR with its range of diverse habitats, is a rewarding experience. Six of the seven sea birds endemic to South Africa, can be seen, namely the Bank, Cape and Crowned Cormorant, Cape Gannet, Hartlaub’s Gull and the African penguin. Palearctic waders abound during summer.
